I have spent the day doing Room Improvement Projects!

Replaced the rusty (and paint splattered) fan and light pull chains. They are shiny now. While I was gone, my parents replaced the little glass bowl on the fan light that forced me to only put tiny dim bulbs in it. The new light cover is a paper lantern, looks cute and allows much more light. Fan situation: 10/10.

My bookshelf digested the pile of comics. I've created a more efficient storage system for the collections - cannibalizing old file folders into three ring binder sleeves. It's ugly, but free and extremely efficient. I've filled up two binders already, and stuffed the remaining sleeves into the magazine holders, just to keep collections together. The binders contain Untold Tales of Spider-Man, Spider-Man & Human Torch, and various Fantastic Four family comics. Very warm and fuzzy. The other collections are: Doctor Doom, Riddler, Hitman, Super-Villain Team-Ups, Daredevil, pastel and cute stuff, werewolves, and Christmas comics. I love goofy Christmas superhero comics - Nick Fury vs the Hatemonger in space on Christmas, Power Man vs a Scrooge-themed villain on Christmas, Doctor Doom vs Ben Grimm on Yancy Street on Christmas, Daredevil knife fighting a guy dressed like Santa on Christmas. I read em every Christmas, and am looking forward to adding Solar and his tied-up supervillain to the pile. I'm also eyeing a copy of Batman & Robin Adventures #3 on eBay. What can I say, we all make our own Christmas traditions.

I have cleared off my desk and arranged letters nicely in the silver tray. It could do with a bit more polishing, but looks nice enough right now. I'm going to try to empty the drawers and set things up for art or letter writing or something. I do love making cards and postcards.

Did I mention the coasters? I had some little square travertine marble tiles scavenged from another house's construction project (undoubtedly the bathroom or pool, since travertine is not slippery when wet), and I stuck some cork sheets to the bottom of each tile to make a cute set of coasters. I'm quite pleased with them.

I cut out some felt circles and hot glued them to the bottom of my trash can to keep it from scuffing up the floor. Got a blister for my troubles. Hot glue is, as advertised, hot.

I brought home a few chunks of wood from a lightning struck redwood in my suitcase, and they had a cool rough aesthetic but were starting to attract cat hair and give off splinters, so today my dad and I sanded em down. I was alarmed at first to see the burl diminishing into a pinkish peeled potato, but it turned out really cool - comfortable to hold in two hands, with cool wood grain swirls and some bits left jagged. The long piece currently looks a lot like a chef's knife, and I think tomorrow we're going to work on bringing out the spiral shape of it. They're a work in progress, but I'm having fun. The grinder is a terrifying and heavy tool.

I'm currently debating where to put the dolls and stuffed animals I've made - I'd like to display them, but I also like the smooth uncluttered look I've got going on right now, and the cats have taken over the tops of my bookshelves. We shall see. I've given away most of the dolls and toys I've made, but I'd like to get back into making them - I have some cool new fabrics and patterns to try out.

A day well spent.
