Sewing And More

My mom decided to try her hand at sewing! She hasn't sewn in ages, so she needed a bit of help figuring out the machine. She decided to start with quilted potholders - cute dragonfly fabric on the outside, towels on the inside. Quilting was a bit difficult. I ripped out a line of puckered stitching for her because I forgot to install the walking foot. The disappearing ink marker disappeared a bit too fast, so I installed the quilting guide for the first time ever. I think the walking foot holds it wonky, because it presses down on the fabric much too hard and doesn't let it scroll past. I rigged it with a pipecleaner to gently bounce over the fabric. My mom calls it the fluffy bunny.
Sewing went pretty well after that - my mom sewed gently wobbling lines, telling herself "it's just a potholder" again and again. I think they're gonna be cute, and I was very encouraging. It's hard to try a new thing you know you're not good at yet. I kept her company, answering her questions, making bias tape for her, and drafting a pattern for a Pete the Cat doll. I'm probably gonna use the same back seam I used on the Keyhole Dolls, for maximum sturdiness, and I'm still debating whether he needs a dowel in there for support.
I promised the kiddo we would make and play with salt dough, and I went out to buy cheap salt for that. I also promised her park time. I'm gathering my strength and energy for that. I'm so tired. I have spent so much time chasing that child today and giving her attention. Man, I'm not cut out for full time aunthood. How do people find the energy to be parents?
I also need to find time to make a present for my grandma. God, I have no idea what I'm gonna make her, and she's arriving in a couple days. Surely I can paper piece something?
