Yeah, I get you on the blandly hyper-chummy thing, I've seen it. You gotta hit the sweet spot between Sterile Wholesomeness and Absolute Grimdarkness where characters aren't tiresome to read about. Holmes can be infuriating and secretive and finicky while still enjoying Watson's company and caring about him.
